Limetec have been specified in the construction of a major, eco friendly social housing project in Suffolk that has already won a prestigious prize. The natural sustainability of Limetec hydraulic lime mortar, lime render and lime plaster; which will perfectly matched the green ethos of the creators of the Three Gardens development, Elmswell, helping architects Riches Hawley Mikhail win a Housing Design Award 2007. The Three Gardens project, funded by Orwell Housing Association, Elmswell Parish Council and Suffolk Preservation Society, was created to become an exemplar for transferable ecological design in social housing. As well as being cost effective to build and contemporary in design, all 26 homes will feature extremely low embodied CO2 in construction and low lifetime energy use. The project is a 26-home scheme, which comprises of 13 two-bed and nine three-bed houses, plus four one-bed flats, in a design setting which emphasises the rural and communal aspects of the area. The scheme was commissioned following a design competition organised by Orwell Housing Association and the Suffolk Preservation Society, in response to the lack of affordable housing for locals in a rapidly-growing commuter belt.
